SuperCollider milestones
as someone often making music on retrocomputers, i am frequently wondering about things like "what is the latest version of SuperCollider that runs on this OS?" or "what is the first version of SuperCollider with support for feature XYZ?". the SuperCollider downloads page covers some of the OS compatibility, but for older operating systems the answer is not always easy to find. hence, i am writing down my findings here for easier reference.
- SuperCollider 2.2.16 and 3d5.1
- last versions to run on Mac OS 9
- 2.2.16 is the last version without the client/server split
- 3d5.1 is described as "an experimental version and is really a different program than version 2". i have not tried it yet.
- SuperCollider 3.4.4
- last version to run on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) on PowerPC
- 3.4.5 crashes with a bus error, at least on my iMac G4
- does not support the command+return shortcut for evaluating an entire parenthesized block. TODO: find out when this was introduced
- SuperCollider 3.4.5
- last version to run on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) on PowerPC?
- SuperCollider 3.11.0
- first version with Ableton Link support
- SuperCollider 3.13.0
- it looks like this will be the last version to run on macOS 10.14 (Mojave)
- although the 3.13.0 "universal" build supports Mojave, some things like command-line sclang are broken. the "legacy" build works fine.
- this one should also be compatible with 10.10 to 10.13 (Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra)
